LAND RECLAMATION
For a growing number of people in
Mumbai, if their house
is not lost to the bulldozer, it could he lost to the sea. Mangroves
act
as windshields as well as natural barriers to curtail the onslaught of
tidal waves, prevent soil erosion, replenish oxygen and serve as a
nursery
for marine species.

Legal and illegal reclamations have choked Mumbai's natural drainages, including those at Dadar Chowpatty, Mahim Creek, Bandra-Kurla, Versova, Gorai and Navi Mumbai. The most scary ecological mistake is the reclamation of the Mahim Creek and bay area: The Bandra-Worli link road. NOISE POLLUTION
Sean Hargrave, "
Rubber Roads Reduce Noise", The

Abs: In
the new technique 3mm rubber granules
are added to the traditional mix of aggregate and bitumen used to
surface
roads. The granules are held between the aggregate chips by the
bitumen.
This I stops the stones rubbing together and creating noise. Instead,
the
energy of a passing car is absorbed by the rubber...

Abs: Mumbai
is rated as the world’s noisiest
city. this means not only that people here are more prone to ear
damage,
but are also susceptible to headaches, high blood pressure and worse,
cardiovascular
diseases. But greater awareness and citizens’ initiatives can change
this,

Abs: Noise
is perceived differently by
different professionals. The physicist perceives it as sound
whose
character can be defined and whose properties can be measured with the
same equipment that measures other sounds. However, the
psychologist
perceives it as an undesired sound as contrasted to speech
and music
which are usually desired sounds'.
